Pizza and pasta, Italian food for dummies

Since I have lived in Italy I have always enjoyed and appreciated the food that we have here and the Italians (almost) take for granted. And each time visitors come from the UK I am reminded that the variety and the quality of the food and drink that we have in Italy is truly exceptional and we eat about 100 times better that the average UK family, for instance. And about 1,000 times better than the USA fast food rubbish!! Let me explain.

The Italians still have an education from their parents about food and drink and what is good and what is to be avoided. As far as I remember growing up in the UK this did not happen. We eat to live in the UK whereas the Italians live to eat!! The philosophy is totally different. Food is always one of the major talking points in Italy.

Wherever you visit from the far north down to Sicily you find that the food is always good but different as every region has its own specialities, traditions and tastes. You can find different dishes everywhere whereas pizza is available throughout the country but again with subtle differences. The pizza base in Naples is generally thick whereas in Roma the pizza is much thinner and lighter so it all boils down to what you prefer.

Pizza. Ok. Well the original Italian pizza is made by hand and cooked in a wood fired oven which gives the pizza that typical pizza taste. Pizza in the UK is typically frozen so prepared in a factory and then cooked in an electric oven, the taste is totally different. Pizza Express in the UK charges minimum 15 Pounds for a single pizza whereas in most areas of Italy the pizza is a poor mans food and starts from about 5 Euro so about 4.3 pounds and the quality is soooooo much better! For a quarter of the price!
