Parking in Amalfi has always been a challenge and expensive, current rates (2023) are about 40 Euro per night for a car. But that is not the biggest challenge in Amalfi this season. The main problem is simply finding a space. The biggest car park in the town is called the Luna Rossa and built into the rock (so underground) and it opened about 18 years ago, this car park has about 200 spaces for cars plus another 35 for motorbikes and scooters.
Well perhaps, had. At the end of October 2022 the cars were booted out and the place CLOSED for some major maintenance work. They discovered (after 18 years) that some safety regulations had been overlooked. Oops. And the Major of Amalfi promised that the reopening would be May 2023. But here we are in the middle of June as I write and guess what……it is still closed so parking in the town has been reduced from around 300 places down to about 100 (and the full 300 were never enough).
Fortunately Hotel Aurora has its own parking garage underneath the hotel. Back in the pre COVID years I had suggested to Daniela (aka Mrs Boss) that a second floor could be useful but she suggested that the cost was not really justified. Fast forward to this year and Mrs Boss reconsidered her decision and decided to bite the bullet and ordered three car lifts for the hotel car park.
WOW. They are truly amazing. The Italian manufacturer delivered the 3 lifts directly from the factory in north Italy and their guys then installed them, another company then had to ensure the safety and sign off legally these lifts and the installation. Well things were very last minute and on the Friday all was good and then Saturday the hotel opened, phew!!!
The lifts have been working hard ever since and truly earning their pay!!! See the pictures below. And Stop Press, the Luna Rossa has just managed to reopen the ground floor so that gives about 20 car spaces…..and now the 1st floor, but the spaces are still totally full by about 10am every morning.
