There is no doubt that this area in the south of Spain is totally beautiful. I write this in Estepona an ex small fishing village only about 40km along the coast from Gibralter and about 80km from Malaga airport, where we flew in from Naples. This is our third visit cos we simply LOVE the place!!
The climate here is amazing, very very low rainfall and mainly warm sunny days (about 311 per annum) all year round. Many Brits (and others) have settled in this area and the developers and builders work tirelessly to offer new housing, hotels and resorts. Golf courses and luxury hotels abound, look at this place called The Edge that is now almost finished, they want 1 Million Euro for the smallest appartments wow!!. My mate from Finland purchased a lovely pad in Estepona and he is a very happy fellow.
The history is fascinating. Spain today is a full member of the EU but it was a dictatorship under Franco until 1975 so had no extradition treaties at all. Then they became a democracy so extradition treaties were signed but were not backdated so many of the criminals (British and others) have stayed and I guess from some of the big money that you can almost feel in this area! This book tells all. They must keep their noses clean to remain under the radar. AND now there are many Golf Clubs and five star hotels in the area too!!
