Lets explore this concept together. In every activity, sport or whatever we all have our own “Comfort Zone” which comes from our brain and controls the level at which we are happy to conduct that sport or activity. This level is developed in our minds from a combination of factors mainly from our experiences good or bad so in other words if you ride a bike on the motorway at 180 kph then you are comfortable anywhere up to that speed and you feel “safe”. If instead you have never ridden at over 120 kph then that defines the maximum speed at which you feel safe.
Lets go further. Riding a motorcycle well is really more about corners than a straight road so MANY bike riders are well able to ride fast on a motorway but then need to slow or brake to get round a corner cos they do not understand how a motorbike works, perhaps they have never studied or taken a training course. Indeed this is really the majority of guys who ride for example a shiny new BMW, they go to the dealer and buy the bike and buy into the BMW image so that includes the jacket and helmet and gloves and stuff. And they think that they have the best bike so all is ok. BUT if they do not learn and apply some theory then they may come unstuck. In Italy the two top sellers are the Yamaha TMax and the BMW GS1250 and some guys go directly from one to the other cos they are both very fashionable.
The best way to learn to ride a motorcycle is to take a course with a training school either on the road or on a closed circuit and to LISTEN to what they tell you. In the UK the best trainers are the Police without doubt and then the various riding schools of which the Ron Haslam school is the best known. In Italy I worked for several years with Run x Fun and wow I learned alot about my bike and my riding.
BUT ironically many guys who ride motorbikes also think that they are really good so they don’t need any training. Sad. To book, pay for and attend any training course requires admitting that you do NOT know everything about riding motorbikes right? So therein lies the problem. Because the most direct way to improve your riding is always through training so that you can expand your comfort zone.
Most riders fall off NOT because they have exceeded the limits of the bike (tyres, brakes, suspension or a combination of the three) but because they exceed the limits of their own comfort zone and thus “step off” the bike for fear. Take a look at drivers when you next drive on a motorway. You can easily see who knows what they are doing (commercial drivers are usually relaxed and concentrating on the road) and those less able drivers who are hunched over the wheel and holding it as if they are afraid it will come off. Last week I drove my van to Bergamo and back so about 750km each way and it was easy to see who was comfortable and who was not.
PLEASE give this concept some thought and work on expanding your all important comfort zone, training is the key.
